August’s Down The Street saw us dive back into our DIY roots after a successful summer season for Stanford Sound & Stage.
There’s no better feeling than coming home! This night brought out an old friend from L.A. and a Santanero who was kind enough to head down the street to El Indio on 24 hours notice. Add to that the debut of El Indio’s new late night value menu, a Down The Street exclusive, and it was the type of night we’re grateful for: filled with great music and great friends.
This most recent installation of Down The Street saw us encounter a hiccup that comes with the territory, a last minute lineup change. We’ve been in the game long enough to not sweat it too much and live in “the show must go on” type spirit. We want to give the people a good show and things will work out. We are fortunate to be able to tap into our large network of artists we’ve spent years growing and nurturing to see if anyone from the many awesome bands we know could fill the spot. Thankfully, Francis Co. & The Lusitanos were willing to come through and jam.
Francis is a Santa Ana local we’re proud to have worked with a number of times in recent years, including The Frida Cinema’s outdoor movie series at Birch Park. He stops in on Down The Street nights from time to time to take some pretty incredible photos on his vintage Minolta cameras which you can check out here @panchos.pictures Like many of us, Francis Co. & The Lusitanos had been on a brief summer break so this 24-hour notice gig at El Indio was the band getting back together for the first time in a while. Though they humbly called the set a band practice of sorts, it was a super solid set in our opinion. Whether or not you’re from Santa Ana, Francis Co. & The Lusitanos put on a performance you can connect with. Francis’ country influence combined with tales of wanderlust and home-town pride make him a stand-out artist from any scene. His lyrics and sound emit his embrace of the cultural blend many of us experience and with songs like our feature, “Santa Ana’s Son”, there is no question that of the many genres Santa Ana has to offer, Francis Co. & The Lusitanos are a uniquely Santa Ana sound.
If you’re familiar with Kilson Street and live events we curate in Santa Ana, or just love good music from Southern California, you might recognize the bassist of El Colmo. That’s Arturo from legendary L.A based globe-trotting cumbia/vallenato collective, Very Be Careful. We’ve been fortunate to work with Very Be Careful on numerous occasions in Santa Ana including a Kilson Street episode in the ol’ garage and most recently when they headlined Cito De Mayo 2024 put on by Cerveza Cito Brewery with stage and sound production by Stanford Sound & Stage. We know Art as a very calm and focused person, so we weren’t too surprised when we heard about his side project, El Colmo. A noticeable 180 from VBC’s dance-inducing cubmias, El Colmo reminds us of latino post punk & rock in the vein of Los Saicos, El Tri, and Television at the same time. There are some really funky sounds and dissonance, while also keeping a cool head for the groove. The El Colmo song we’re featuring is called “La Casa Invisible” which they plan to distribute on 7” in the near future, so be sure to follow them for the latest updates.
Resident Vinyl is back, baby! And boy have they been busy. Things have been going great for Resident Vinyl at their newest location inside Contra Coffee in Old Town Orange. It’s a really cool spot and we’re excited for their future plans for the space. We may be a little biased, but for a record shop, Resident Vinyl are always working on new ways to bring their favorite music to locals with an energy that is hard to come by. We’re looking forward to what they’re cooking up with the Contra team! And we’re so happy they were down to join us again at Down The Street, slanging vinyl and creating the night’s custom playlist.
We have an exclusive menu!!! Thanks to our hosts with most, El Indio Botanas Y Cerveza, Down The Street has a late night menu of tacos, tostaditas, aguas frescas, and chelas at a price that’s hard to beat. This deal is available from 8PM-11PM so there’s plenty of time to grab a meal while supporting local music.
Down The Street returns to El Indio Thursday, September 26th. We’re welcoming Orange County-based friends The Offtrax and we’re excited for Down The Street’s first out-of-state band Los Emptys to join us from Las Vegas. Do not miss it!.
